The Crash of 1956
the sound was deafening
as a car hit the rear
of our light blue and white
1956
plymouth
station
wagon
pushing us into the car ahead
sheering our body bolts
slamming my head against
the top of the no headrest seat
trauma crashing noise never forgotten
frightening disbelief pain
moving away from the scene
watching them untangle the mess
passengers in others cars hurt badly
my becoming queasy
hospital visit
injured neck and head
totaled
fast forward to 2010
son nicholas is a doctor
finding wrinkled troubled body spots
adjusting and smoothing them
with his hands traumeel
and the dancing red light of a laser
on this weekly visit
he worked on the back of my head
and around my neck
always my problem area
both bothering me for years
during and after his adjustment
I felt a tingling sensation
running through my body
something was happening
it was good
by morning I knew what it was
our crash in 1956
came reeling back to me
that night
like it was yesterday
reminding me
of all the trauma and pain
and realizing it had been
stored in the hit on my head
old troubled tears
filled my eyes
giving me quiet relief
the crash was leaving me
after all these years
a highway brought it
and nick created a highway
through my body
for it to leave
the crash of 1956
is finally over
